An island alongside the coast of Maine that was house to a mixed-race fishing group later forcibly eliminated by the state has been added to the Nationwide Register of Historic Locations after a years-long effort.

The island, positioned within the tiny city of Phippsburg, was formally listed on the nationwide register on Sept. 19, federal data state. Marnie Voter, a supporter of the itemizing and a relative of a Malaga Island descendant, stated the island is “sacred to the descendants of those that had been evicted over 100 years in the past” and the itemizing is a big step.
“Maine acknowledges what occurred there, the naming implies that what occurred there may be of nationwide historic curiosity, and to the residing descendants it serves as an acknowledgment that their households had been harmless pawns swept up within the politics of the eugenics motion of the day,” Voter stated.
The Maine Coast Heritage Belief acquired the island in 2001 and has managed it as a protect since.
