In some alternate universe, possibly “The Iron Large” follows Brad Fowl’s authentic plan to have the Large die on the finish — fortunately, McCanlies realized that he merely could not let that be the final we noticed of him. Certainly, ending with the triumphant callback to the reassembling sequence from earlier within the movie does nothing to undermine the climactic sacrifice. What issues is the Large’s reminiscence of Hogarth’s phrases whereas flying out into area to satisfy the nuclear warhead, recalling that, “You’re what you select to be.” His selection is the pure endpoint of his arc, not his dying.
And whereas essentially the most cynical interpretation of the ending is that it leaves the door open for sequels (which clearly by no means occurred), the tone and spirit of the movie all however calls for that the Large survive. Even when it evokes “Bambi” with the deer scene within the forest and opens the Large’s eyes to the inevitability of dying, “The Iron Large” nonetheless manages to experience that impossibly tough line of balancing sobering, adult-minded themes (a relentless in Fowl’s filmography, as we noticed in “The Incredibles”) with that childlike sense of marvel infused in Hogarth’s impossibly vast eyes and the Large’s personal understanding of who and what he’s.
So when the stray bolt (the one a part of the Large recovered from the explosion) begins to leap round in Hogarth’s room and makes its technique to the window, the whole lot clicks into place. We’ll by no means know if the Large blasts off to a different planet completely, protected within the information that he is not a gun, or if the 2 ever reunite for extra adventures.
